Zoom and Spiritual Direction: What are we learning?

Zoom has boomed under lockdown, and I for one have been on a pretty steep learning curve with it. Having now conducted dozens of one to one spiritual direction conversations, convened several committee and small group meetings and led a couple of online half-day sessions for spiritual directors I find I’ve learnt a lot about the ins and outs of managing this means of communication. 

I’m really interested to consider with others some of the implications of using Zoom for Spiritual Direction. I’m aware of some great advantages and some challenges and disadvantages.  It would be good for those of us who are learning from this experience to take time to reflect on it, share together and see what general conclusions we can draw and offer to the wider community of Spiritual Directors.

So if you would be interested to participate in an online 2 hour session – I’ve fixed on Tuesday 14 July 2pm – 4pm (BST) to do this. 

Alongside this, there are also really interesting questions about what we are learning about training Spiritual Directors and Zoom. This may be a bit more of a niche market, but I’ll host this conversation the following week Tuesday 21 July 2pm – 4pm.

    Thanks for the information about the Zoom meetings. I’m really interested in both but, at the moment am not free for either! Will you be circulating any information after they’ve taken place? I’d very much like to keep in touch on this subject so thanks for what you are doing.

  7. Hi nick I am a relatively inexperienced SD (Ignatian trained) and also an art therapist. There has been a lot of training and discussion in the therapeutic world about using technology – pros and cons and I would like to attend the July 14 session if you think it appropriate but I can’t work out the link.   10. Hello Nick Liz Hoare passed this on to me – I would love to join conversation on July 21 but I can’t make the link work …how do I get there on the day ?
    We are doing a lot remotely at Sarum including 2 SD courses and another one about to start for another organisation

I am a spiritual director and help distribute a newsletter to spiritual directors in the diocese of Coventry. Today’s newsletter will mention these planned conversations. I am used to participating in Zoom.
